Introduction
Ferric carboxymaltose is an intravenous iron complex used as an Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) for treating iron deficiency anemia. It consists of a ferric hydroxide core stabilized by a carbohydrate shell of carboxymaltose, allowing for controlled release and targeted delivery of iron to the body. This API enables high-dose iron administration, rapidly replenishing iron stores and increasing hemoglobin levels. It is particularly useful for patients with chronic kidney disease, inflammatory bowel disease, or those who cannot tolerate or have not responded to oral iron supplements. Ferric carboxymaltose is generally well-tolerated, with a lower risk of allergic reactions compared to other IV iron therapies.
